Berwyn and Cicero can move from humid heat to thunderstorms, bitter wind, ice, and road salt across the year. A safe visit plan changes with the weather, the surface, and the individual dog rather than relying on one universal cutoff.

Plan for the dog in front of you

Age, breed traits, coat, body condition, fitness, paw health, medication, and heart or breathing concerns all change what is appropriate. Owners should share veterinary guidance for their own dog. A walker should never diagnose or override it.

Heat changes more than distance

Warm, humid conditions can require a shaded route, slower pace, more water and rest, a shorter potty trip, or indoor enrichment instead. Pavement and artificial surfaces may be much hotter than the air.

  • Check local heat alerts, humidity, sunlight, and surface exposure.
  • Watch for behavior that is unusual for that dog, including lagging or unwillingness to continue.
  • Move to a cool setting and follow the emergency plan if distress is suspected.
  • Never leave an animal in a parked vehicle.

Cold, ice, and salt need their own plan

Wind, wet fur, ice, and deicing products can make a routine route unsafe. Short-coated, small, senior, and medically vulnerable dogs may need shorter outdoor time. Paws should be checked and cleaned according to the owner's care plan.

Lightning and severe weather are stop conditions

A scheduled visit is not a reason to remain outside during lightning, dangerous winds, flooding, or travel restrictions. The walker should get the dog and themselves to safety, notify the owner, document the adjustment, and reschedule when required.

Decide before the route begins

A good service agreement explains who decides, how the visit changes, whether indoor care replaces outdoor time, when travel is suspended, and how clients are notified. That removes pressure from the caregiver during a fast-changing situation.
